How to Measure the Perfect Necklace It's important to get the proper measurements when choosing the perfect length for your necklace, whether it be a standard necklace or a slip chain! Materials You'll Need Flexible Measuring Tape: A soft, flexible tailor's tape measure is ideal. If you don't have one, you can use a piece of string or ribbon and then measure the string with a ruler. Mirror (Optional but Recommended): A mirror can help you ensure the tape is positioned correctly, especially if you're doing it yourself. Pen and Paper: To jot down your measurement. Measuring for Classic Necklace/Choker Determine Desired Length: Think about where you want the necklace to fall. Do you want it to sit high on the neck, at the collarbone, or lower on the chest? Position the Measuring Tape/String: Wrap the flexible measuring tape or string gently around your neck, starting from the point where you want the necklace to begin (usually the base of your neck or just below the Adam's apple for a standard fit). Bring the tape/string around your neck and down the front of your chest to the exact spot where you want the bottom of the necklace or pendant to rest. Hold the Measurement: Hold the tape/string at the point where it meets the starting point, forming a complete circle or loop at your desired length. Ensure the tape/string is not too tight or too loose; it should simulate how you want the necklace to hang. Read the Measurement: If using a flexible measuring tape, read the number directly where the tape overlaps. This measurement is the total circumference of the necklace. If using a string or ribbon, carefully mark the point where it overlaps. Then, lay the string flat and measure its length with a ruler or hard measuring tape. Consider the Clasp and Pendant: Remember that the measurement you take is the total length of the necklace, including the clasp. If the necklace has a centerpiece, factor in its length. The measurement you took is where the top of the pendant would likely sit with the centerpiece. Repeat for Accuracy: Take the measurement a couple of times to ensure consistency. If you get slightly different numbers, use the one that feels most comfortable for your desired fit. Measuring for a Slip Chain Prepare Your Hair: If you have thick or voluminous hair, it's best to flatten it as much as possible. If you typically wear your hair a certain way under headwear (e.g., in a braid or bun), consider if that will affect the measurement. For most purposes, a natural, flattened state is best. Locate Your Crown: The crown of your head is generally the highest point of your skull, usually towards the back-top area where your hair naturally swirls or where a hat would sit highest. Position the Measuring Tape: Start at the very top center of your forehead, just above your eyebrows. This is typically where the front edge of a hat would rest. Bring the measuring tape over the highest point of your crown. Continue the tape down to the most prominent part of the back of your head (the occipital bone), usually where the base of your skull meets your neck. Ensure Proper Alignment: Make sure the tape is snug but not tight. It should lie flat against your head without any twists or slack. Keep the tape level around your head. Avoid letting it dip down at the back or rise up at the front. If using a mirror, check that the tape is positioned correctly from all angles. Read the Measurement: Note the measurement where the tape overlaps. Read the number in inches or centimeters, depending on your preference or the requirements of what you're measuring for. If using string, mark the string where it overlaps, then lay the string flat and measure it with a ruler. Repeat for Accuracy: Take the measurement two or three times to ensure consistency. If you get slightly different numbers, take the average, or use the largest measurement to ensure a comfortable fit. Remember, slip chains are continuous so the measurement must be large enough to go over your head! Average Sizes (This is only an estimation from personal experience) Individuals with Smaller sized heads will fit 23"+, the average sized head will fit 25"+, larger heads should order a minimum of 26"+. If you have very volumous hair, it's always best to order +2"-3".
